Town Councillor Applauds Globe's Armoury Ingenuity

Local and Regional Councillor Jane Fogal (Wards 3 and 4) has written a great article about the Armoury Project on her blog.

Here is an excerpt:

"Fortunately, Globe Productions had been saving up their money in the hopes of one day having a permanent home and found that the old armoury building would be a terrific opportunity to make their dream a reality. Under the leadership of Lois Fraser a proposal was put together and presented to the town. The proposal was accepted in principle and Globe was immediately at work to secure the roof. They hired a heritage architect and invested in an entirely new roof that sits above the old one. It is well insulated and is clad in a lovely green metal pictured above.

The building is now the responsibility of Globe Productions. Their plan is to use it for rehearsal space and storage. In addition they will permit further community use as is practical.

This is a wonderful outcome for the whole community. Many thanks to Globe for seeing the potential and showing the leadership to make it happen."

Globe Productions Seeks Local Charity Partner

As printed in the Georgetown Independent today:

"Georgetown Globe Musical Productions is looking for a local charity to partner with for the dress rehearsal performance of Into the Woods— its first show of the 2010-2011 season.

The Tony-Award winning, Broadway hit will run from Friday, Nov. 19 to Saturday, Nov. 27 at the John Elliott Theatre in Georgetown. The dress rehearsal takes place on Thursday, Nov. 18 at 8 p.m.

Local charities interested in this unique fundraising opportunity should contact Bobbie Flatt, Into the Woods Publicity Manager, at georgetown_globe@yahoo.ca by Sept. 18.

Into the Woods is based on the book by James Lapine and features music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. The musical is full of familiar fairy tale characters, living out their stories in the same forest at the same time. It includes, of course, a wicked witch and a menacing giant. The characters are constantly bumping into each other in the woods and becoming entangled in one another’s lives. Into the Woods won Tony Awards for Best Book, Best Actress in a Musical and Best Score.

And, as an Early Bird Special offer during the month of September, tickets are only $20 each (regular price $24). Call the Box Office, 905-877-3700 or visit www.halthonhills.ca/theatre to book your tickets now. "

Our Cool New "Into the Woods" Poster

Demolition Derby

Demolition Derby @ Potomac SpeedwayImage by citron_smurf via Flickr
As of Monday night’s Council meeting, we are now in full legal ownership of the Armoury. The work continues Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 to 8:30 when the “demolition derby” is happening at 1 Park Ave.

The goal is to tear down the last pieces of the mezzanine walls and ceiling, so that we can have the sand blaster fellow back. He has done the main area of the Armoury (and it looks great!), but now we need to sandblast the ceilings and walls of the two mezzanines on the sides. We need to build and move scaffolding so he can do the rest, get rid of all the stuff that was pulled down in preparation and then do a final sand sweep cleanup of the whole area, so that we can start building instead of tearing down.

There is a huge pile of stuff on the floor of the armoury that needs to be loaded into a bin and taken to the dump. Better yet (because it is cheaper) we could load Al’s trailer and take it to the dump, instead of paying hundreds for a bin. All we need is someone with a trailer hitch who can take it over to Armstrong Ave to the dump. Do you have a vehicle with a hitch on it?

As it keeps getting darker earlier, we intend to move to standard Saturday cleanups (say 9am to 2pm) at the armoury, so that we can make more progress with more assistance. Stay turned for more info on when this is happening.

In the meanwhile, let’s thank Norm, Mark and Al who are real stalwarts in the demolition process and all the kind Globe members who have come out to assist. Hey, it’s officially ours now, so let’s finish off the dirty work so we can start rebuilding!

Lois
