Mary has volunteered her time in costuming 42 musical productions. For the majority of these (28) she was the lead costumer and for 14 of these, she was a key player as part of a costume team. She has personally sewn over 3,000 costumes for Globe!!
Most people doing work of this nature charge the groups that they are working for. The last show that we did without Mary was Man of La Mancha and it cost us $2,000.00 to get the job done. I estimate that without Mary’s contributions, we would have had to pay between $60 and $70 thousand dollars in outside services. It is fair to say that if she had not done this, Globe would not exist today, at least not in terms of financial success and artistic success. The quality of her work has been recognized at the ACTCO Awards which covers community theatre for the entire Greater Toronto Area.
Mary is not just “all about costuming”. For many years, Mary has been in charge of our rehearsal hall. She deals with the landlord, leaky ceilings, renting out costumes to other groups, changes burnt out light bulbs…you name it. She has also volunteered on the Globe Executive for many years. She participates in the Executive’s decisions and is a key team player. Since we started the Youth Company in Jan 2009, she has been a big supporter of our youth. She has costumed their shows and also participated in our Youth Company costume workshops in 2009 and 2010, bringing 50 or more costumes out for the kids to try on and teaching them about costume design. In addition to all the aforementioned items, Mary has been singing and dancing on stage for over 20 years.
Mary is very pleasant to work with and a much beloved member of Globe. No job is too big or too small. She doesn’t get stressed or get nasty, no matter how tight the timelines are or how much work still has to be done. She simply gets her sewing machine out and stays up all night. When it is all over, she does the laundry, irons the costumes and adds them to our collection, ready for the next show to come along.
Mary lead and managed the production of costumes for:
2010-Beauty and the Beast (Youth Company)
2010- Into The Woods
2009-All You Need is Love (Cabaret), Guys and Dolls
2008-South Pacific, Ragtime, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas
2006-Once Upon A Mattress
2005-Big The Musical, Globetrotting (Cabaret), Oklahoma
2004-Don’t Touch That Dial, The Wizard Of Oz
2003-Hooked On A Feeling 2 (Cabaret), Cabaret
2002-Waiting In The Wings (Cabaret), Evita
2001-Hooked On A Feeling 1 (Cabaret)
2000-Encore Encore (Cabaret),
Joseph And The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat
Crazy For You
1999-Mame
1998-The Sound Of Music, The Pajama Game
1994-Music Man
1992-South Pacific, Into The Woods
1991-My Fair Lady
And she assisted with the following:
2009-The Wizard Of Oz (Youth Company)
2004-City Of Angels
1999-Gondoliers
1997-Cabaret From A To Z (Cabaret), The Secret Garden, Crazy For You
1996-Seven Brides For Seven Brothers, Camelot
1995-Bye Bye Birdie
1995-Leader of the Pack.
1995-Pirates Of Penzance
1994-Anne Of Green Gables
1992-Grease, Oliver
Thank you, Mary, for making us all look so good!

Sharkey's Devour New York
Beatrice, Kevin and Maeve Sharkey made a number of trips this year to the big apple, primarily to take in Broadway shows. Here is a little insight and recommendations from Sharkey and Co. on what to see and how to see it on your next trip!
Broadway shows the Sharkeys saw in 2010 and our ratings on a 1-5 star scale:
Next to Normal - this new-style musical/play hybrid stuns and moves you, six person cast, stark, powerful story, worth seeing more than once as we did, 5 stars
Wicked - sets, vocals and costumes continue to dazzle, eighth time seeing it over the years, just love it!, 41/2 stars
Promises, Promises - wonderful energy, v. funny, amazing dancing, great leads in Kristen Chenowith and Sean Hayes, so good we saw it twice, 41/2 stars
In the Heights - new production is strong in all areas plus has celebrity appeal, 41/2 stars
Billy Elliot - inspiring storyline with v. strong score and dancing, 41/2 stars
Chicago - both music and dancing continued to razzle dazzle us, 4 stars
Shrek - another great rollicking family show with the songs, characters and humour that you know & love from the movie, 4 stars
American Idiot - minimal plot, essentially a rock concert for those who love Greenday music, teenage heaven, 3 1/2 stars
Mary Poppins - magical family show, perfect for kids, and Mary flies! 31/2 stars
West Side Story - classic storyline well done but with nothing new added to capture your heart, 3 stars
Why and how we saw so many:
We are Broadway and New York obsessed (Maeve now has signed posters from all of the above shows adorning her room; they are signed by the cast at the stage door meet and greets.)
To feed this obsession we now know ALL of the tricks on ways to get $25 - $40 orchestra/box/front row seats via day-of-performance rush seats, student rush seats and/or lottery seats (picky stuff like when to show up and where to stand to get to the start of the line) without wasting a lot of your condensed NYC time/effort.
Each show has slightly different rules so planning when, where and what show tickets to go for is critical. Go to http://www.playbill.com/celebritybuzz/article/82428-Broadway-Rush-Lottery-and-Standing-Room-Only-Policies or http://www.nytix.com/Links/Broadway/lotteryschedule.html#RUSH to get started on your plan!
And when the person sitting beside you inevitably tells you about the great deal they got on their $95 seats and you paid $26.50 for yours learn to just smile and nod...
Cheers, Beatrice

Excerpts from the Georgetown Independent Article - Thursday, December 2, 2010
"Receiving funding locally are Georgetown Globe Musical Productions ($150,000), Georgetown Skating Club ($30,500), Roxy Community Music Place ($15,000) and 676 Lorne Scots Royal Canadian Army Cadets ($44,400).
Globe will receive its funding over one year to renovate and re-purpose the Georgetown Armoury in the fairgrounds. The group is renovating the building for its new home. The renovation will help improve the facility’s energy efficiency and make it more accessible to community residents.
“We are absolutely thrilled and very, very grateful,” said Georgetown Globe president Lois Fraser.
“The Trillium Foundation recognized this is an excellent project,” said Fraser. “It is going to enable us to get heating, lighting and accessible washrooms.”
Fraser said the building will be brought up to code so Globe can invite the public in for some performances.
She said although much work has already been done at the armoury, including replacing the roof and sandblasting the building’s interior, “there is still a huge amount of work to be done.”
Globe hopes to start a capital campaign in the new year to raise additional funds to complete the renovation.
Globe hopes to be in and practising in the Armoury by next September."
Ontario Trillium Foundation is an agency of the Government of Ontario.
Other Halton groups receiving funding include:
• Alzheimer Society of Hamilton and Halton— $101,100
• Children’s Aid Society of Halton— $210,000
• Halton Food for Thought— $134,000
• Halton Multicultural Council— $148,500
