Mary Bilik Udell

Mary has volunteered her time in costuming 42 musical productions. For the majority of these (28) she was the lead costumer and for 14 of these, she was a key player as part of a costume team. She has personally sewn over 3,000 costumes for Globe!!

Most people doing work of this nature charge the groups that they are working for. The last show that we did without Mary was Man of La Mancha and it cost us $2,000.00 to get the job done. I estimate that without Mary’s contributions, we would have had to pay between $60 and $70 thousand dollars in outside services. It is fair to say that if she had not done this, Globe would not exist today, at least not in terms of financial success and artistic success. The quality of her work has been recognized at the ACTCO Awards which covers community theatre for the entire Greater Toronto Area.

Mary is not just “all about costuming”. For many years, Mary has been in charge of our rehearsal hall. She deals with the landlord, leaky ceilings, renting out costumes to other groups, changes burnt out light bulbs…you name it. She has also volunteered on the Globe Executive for many years. She participates in the Executive’s decisions and is a key team player. Since we started the Youth Company in Jan 2009, she has been a big supporter of our youth. She has costumed their shows and also participated in our Youth Company costume workshops in 2009 and 2010, bringing 50 or more costumes out for the kids to try on and teaching them about costume design. In addition to all the aforementioned items, Mary has been singing and dancing on stage for over 20 years.

Mary is very pleasant to work with and a much beloved member of Globe. No job is too big or too small. She doesn’t get stressed or get nasty, no matter how tight the timelines are or how much work still has to be done. She simply gets her sewing machine out and stays up all night. When it is all over, she does the laundry, irons the costumes and adds them to our collection, ready for the next show to come along.
