A community theatre production of this magnitude cannot be accomplished without the help of many, many dedicated volunteers. If your child becomes part of the Seussical cast, it will be essential to the success of the show for you to assist with pre-show preparation including set construction, painting, costumes, move-in day, etc.
In addition, we will require your assistance during the run of the show backstage (supervising children, helping with props, providing snacks for the cast at intermission) and/or Front of House (taking tickets, seating patrons, handing out programs).

All About Seussical!
If you are thinking about auditioning for Seussical, you may want to do a little research about the show.
Book by: Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty
Co-Conceived by: Eric Idle
Lyrics by: Lynn Ahrens
Music by: Stephen Flaherty
Tip # 1 - Read the synopsis
Based on the beloved characters and stories of Dr.Seuss, this musical incorporates elements from at least 15 Dr. Seuss books and includes appearances by many of his most famous characters.
Seussical the Musical follows the adventures of Horton, an elephant who one day hears voices coming from a speck of dust. He soon discovers that within this tiny speck exists the smallest planet in the universe!
And upon this tiny planet live a tiny race of creatures known as Whos! Although ridiculed by the other animals in the Jungle of Nool for believing in something he cannot see, Horton stubbornly persists in his belief that the Whos exist.
Meanwhile, the citizens of Who are having some adventures of their own, including a war over which side of the bread gets buttered. Jojo, the smallest child in the city of Who, parallels Horton's journey as he is ostracized for the unpopular act of thinking -- an activity not encouraged by the parents and teachers of Whosville.
But in spite of these obstacles, Jojo and Horton attempt to do what they think is right, and together they sing the duet "Alone in the Universe."
However, their path will not be easy. Horton is sold to the Circus McGurkus and eventually goes on trial before Judge Yertle the Turtle before the other animals of the jungle come to understand, as Horton has always known, that "a person's a person, no matter how small."
Tip #2 - Check out the Character Descriptions
Main Characters
Cat in the Hat - Out of this world, incredible at improv throughout the show
Horton Hears a Who - Passive, kind natured, compassionate, gentle, a thinker and a loner of sorts

Gertrude McFuzz - Madly in love with Horton. Shy, reserved, self-conscious of her looks because she only has one feather.
Mayzie Labird - Arrogant, selfish, flirtatious and flashy in nature.
Sour Kangaroo - Strong willed, listens to no one, an over protective momma kangaroo.
Young Kangaroo - This is a side kick role and can be played by either a kangaroo puppet or as a small child.
Mrs. Mayor - He loves his town and all of his Whos but wishes his son would be more focused.
General Genghis Khan Schmitz - Strong, assertive, arrogant. GGKS has a very strong military presence - yet beneath it all he cares about is his soldiers deeply.

Introducing Angel Ottema
We are delighted to have Angel Ottema in the role as Choreographer for our March Break 2011 youth company show, Seussical.
Angel is the owner and director of Dance Spirit Studios in Guelph, Ontario. http://www.dancespiritstudios.ca/. Here is a little more about Angel in her own words.
"Dancing has been a "staple" in my life since the age of four and I have hardly missed a beat in over 35 years. I caught the teaching "bug" at the age of 14 and became a certified member of Dance Masters of America (D.M.A.) in 1987. After graduating with an Honours Business Degree from Sheridan College, I opened my first dance studio in Aberfoyle. In the following years, I have continued my education through many distinguished organizations and ultimately D.M.A. Teachers Training School - completing post-graduate work in Dance and Musical Theatre through the University at Buffalo (U@B); where I choose to continue every year with Graduate studies in Dance Education. In 1989 I opened my second dance studio in Rockwood and decided to relocate to Guelph in 2004 to accommodate students from the surrounding areas. Each year I am responsible for directing, producing, costume designing, scenery/prop. designing, and choreographing of Annual Recitals and Community Shows.
Throughout the years I have used my choreographic talents to work with local theatre groups and assist with school plays, large production numbers and performances. I also enjoy the opportunity to volunteer teach to various grade levels at local schools.
With over 25 years of experience teaching Specialized Toddler and Preschool Programs, and all ages/levels in Tap, Jazz, Ballet, Lyrical, Acrobatics, Stepdance, Pointe, Musical Theatre, Modern, Contemporary, Partner/Adagio Dance, Stretch, Dance Fitness, and Social Dance, I feel that Dance Spirit Studios definitely has something to offer for EVERYONE. Most importantly - I love to teach. There is nothing more rewarding than to help someone to learn ~ their success is your success and their achievements are your rewards."

Mike Rainey, Ralph Cunningham Award Winner
Mike Rainey works full time at the Rose Theatre as a theatre technician. He has designed the lighting for ten of the Globe shows in a volunteer capacity. In 2008, Mike won a Thea Award from the Association of Community Theatres - Central Ontario (ACT-CO) for his lighting design of Singing in the Rain and was nominated in 2009 for Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.
From those who have worked with him, Mike is known as an extremely hard worker, using his own vacation days during tech week (the week preceeding the opening of the show when all the technical components are set including lighting and sound) to make sure everything is set up and working before the cast arrives in the evening to rehearse.
Thank you, Mike, for all that you have contributed. You are an incredibly valuable asset to Globe and to the theatre!

Ralph Cunningham Award - All About Ralph
We asked Nanci Llewellyn, first recipient of the Ralph Cunningham Award, to give us a little insight into who Ralph was. Nanci writes,
"Ralph was a kind, giving and compassionate man....even though he sometimes liked to present as gruff, tough and he loved to tease!! Ralph would make you think, he would make you smile and he loved to hug all the theatre gals! He did some acting in his younger years but his real passion, skill and talent was working backstage.
He was a stage-manager, fly operator, set builder, worked as crew, knew about lighting and sound.......he was just so knowledgeable about absolutely everything backstage.....as a result, his expertise was appreciated and respected by all members of Globe (and other theatre groups too). Ralph was particularly passionate about back-stage theatre etiquette...to ensure the safety of the cast while ensuring the show ran smoothly.
Ralph and his wife were farmers, living just outside of Georgetown. For many years Ralph offered his cattle truck for Globe to move our sets to the theatre....despite the odor of the cattle, the gesture was always appreciated. He even loaned us his truck on a few occasions for Globe's entry into the Santa Claus Parade.
Ralph and I met many, many years ago....I didn't move fast enough off stage when he was moving a couch and he knocked me aside....we had a few words and then we became the best of friends for ever more. Ralph and his wife Vivian often entertained us at Globe parties with their incredible clogging dance routines...he loved to dance and he loved to laugh!!! Ralph was a great friend to Globe and Globe members....his memory will live on in our hearts.
It is my understanding that the "Ralph Cunningham Award" is for someone who gives of their time, skills and dedication to the technical aspect of Globe's shows...without the reward of audience applause. I was humbled to be the first recipient of the "Ralph Cunningham Award".....I will cherish the honour forever. Congratulations to Mike Rainey for winning this award.....he too shares Ralph's talents, skills and enthusiasm for the back-stage and wanting to make every Globe show "shine"!!!"

Thanks to all for entering and supporting Globe!
Thank you, Thank you
A Thank you from Lois Fraser, President of the Board of Globe to the outgoing members of the Board:
"We would like to offer our thanks to the following people, who worked diligently on the Executive the past year:
Our Treasurer Maureen Walker (and the “man behind the successful woman”, Chris Walker) has been on the executive for many years and in many capacities. Maureen and Chris put Globe front and centre in all they do. Under X-ray examination, they probably consist of musical notes!
Our Social Convenor, Cecily Restivo, is hanging up her party arranging socks and will produce our Cabaret instead. Thanks, Cecily.
Our Secretary Bobbie Flatt has energy to burn, the enthusiasm of a 20 year old and no doubt has carpel tunnel syndrome from typing up meeting notes and emails. Future historians will look at the notes from the past year and wonder why they were 4 times the size. Thanks for your energy, Bobbie and for continuing your publicity work for Into the Woods.Side Note: Bobbie with an Assistant Director hat on, is the first in our Apprentice Development Program and under the leadership of Into the Woods director Scott Lale.
And last, but certainly not least, we have Melissa Fischer, who has served as VP for three years. Melissa is the hardest working member of Globe and she has taken on jobs that would crush lesser human beings. To say that she has been invaluable to our group is a big understatement. Thanks, Melissa for putting your heart and soul into Globe. We are happy that you will continue your work as “Producer Extraordinaire!”

October Armoury Update
A cute story from Mark Llewellyn:
Lois, Al, Chris, Maureen and I met at the armoury on Thursday with our architect and contractor. While we were discussing matters an older couple stepped in through the open door for a look-see. Lois engaged them in chit-chat and it turns out they are just visiting from the same area of England the Walkers are from. The gentleman's former business was in renovating and restoring old buildings and he was fascinated by the timber construction in ours. When Lois told him about our situation and mentioned our two dollar annual lease agreement with the Town they, get this... handed her 20 bucks and said "we are going home and won't need this Canadian money so here is your rent for the next ten years!!!!!!!!" Wow!
