Mary Bilik Udell

Mary has volunteered her time in costuming 42 musical productions. For the majority of these (28) she was the lead costumer and for 14 of these, she was a key player as part of a costume team. She has personally sewn over 3,000 costumes for Globe!!

Most people doing work of this nature charge the groups that they are working for. The last show that we did without Mary was Man of La Mancha and it cost us $2,000.00 to get the job done. I estimate that without Mary’s contributions, we would have had to pay between $60 and $70 thousand dollars in outside services. It is fair to say that if she had not done this, Globe would not exist today, at least not in terms of financial success and artistic success. The quality of her work has been recognized at the ACTCO Awards which covers community theatre for the entire Greater Toronto Area.

Mary is not just “all about costuming”. For many years, Mary has been in charge of our rehearsal hall. She deals with the landlord, leaky ceilings, renting out costumes to other groups, changes burnt out light bulbs…you name it. She has also volunteered on the Globe Executive for many years. She participates in the Executive’s decisions and is a key team player. Since we started the Youth Company in Jan 2009, she has been a big supporter of our youth. She has costumed their shows and also participated in our Youth Company costume workshops in 2009 and 2010, bringing 50 or more costumes out for the kids to try on and teaching them about costume design. In addition to all the aforementioned items, Mary has been singing and dancing on stage for over 20 years.

Mary is very pleasant to work with and a much beloved member of Globe. No job is too big or too small. She doesn’t get stressed or get nasty, no matter how tight the timelines are or how much work still has to be done. She simply gets her sewing machine out and stays up all night. When it is all over, she does the laundry, irons the costumes and adds them to our collection, ready for the next show to come along.

Mary lead and managed the production of costumes for:

2010-Beauty and the Beast (Youth Company)

2010- Into The Woods

2009-All You Need is Love (Cabaret), Guys and Dolls

2008-South Pacific, Ragtime, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas

2006-Once Upon A Mattress

2005-Big The Musical, Globetrotting (Cabaret), Oklahoma

2004-Don’t Touch That Dial, The Wizard Of Oz

2003-Hooked On A Feeling 2 (Cabaret), Cabaret

2002-Waiting In The Wings (Cabaret), Evita

2001-Hooked On A Feeling 1 (Cabaret)

2000-Encore Encore (Cabaret),

Joseph And The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat

Crazy For You

1999-Mame

1998-The Sound Of Music, The Pajama Game

1994-Music Man

1992-South Pacific, Into The Woods

1991-My Fair Lady

And she assisted with the following:

2009-The Wizard Of Oz (Youth Company)

2004-City Of Angels

1999-Gondoliers

1997-Cabaret From A To Z (Cabaret), The Secret Garden, Crazy For You

1996-Seven Brides For Seven Brothers, Camelot

1995-Bye Bye Birdie

1995-Leader of the Pack.

1995-Pirates Of Penzance

1994-Anne Of Green Gables

1992-Grease, Oliver

Thank you, Mary, for making us all look so good!

Sharkey's Devour New York

Beatrice, Kevin and Maeve Sharkey made a number of trips this year to the big apple, primarily to take in Broadway shows.  Here is a little insight and recommendations from Sharkey and Co.  on what to see and how to see it on your next trip!

Broadway shows the Sharkeys saw in 2010 and our ratings on a 1-5 star scale:

Next to Normal - this new-style musical/play hybrid stuns and moves you, six person cast, stark, powerful story, worth seeing more than once as we did, 5 stars

Wicked - sets, vocals and costumes continue to dazzle, eighth time seeing it over the years, just love it!, 41/2 stars

Promises, Promises - wonderful energy, v. funny, amazing dancing, great leads in Kristen Chenowith and Sean Hayes, so good we saw it twice, 41/2 stars

In the Heights - new production is strong in all areas plus has celebrity appeal, 41/2 stars

Billy Elliot - inspiring storyline with v. strong score and dancing, 41/2 stars

Chicago - both music and dancing continued to razzle dazzle us, 4 stars

Shrek - another great rollicking family show with the songs, characters and humour that you know & love from the movie, 4 stars

American Idiot - minimal plot, essentially a rock concert for those who love Greenday music, teenage heaven, 3 1/2 stars

Mary Poppins - magical family show, perfect for kids, and Mary flies! 31/2 stars

West Side Story - classic storyline well done but with nothing new added to capture your heart, 3 stars

Why and how we saw so many:

We are Broadway and New York obsessed (Maeve now has signed posters from all of the above shows adorning her room; they are signed by the cast at the stage door meet and greets.)

To feed this obsession we now know ALL of the tricks on ways to get $25 - $40 orchestra/box/front row seats via day-of-performance rush seats, student rush seats and/or lottery seats (picky stuff like when to show up and where to stand to get to the start of the line) without wasting a lot of your condensed NYC time/effort.

Each show has slightly different rules so planning when, where and what show tickets to go for is critical. Go to http://www.playbill.com/celebritybuzz/article/82428-Broadway-Rush-Lottery-and-Standing-Room-Only-Policies  or http://www.nytix.com/Links/Broadway/lotteryschedule.html#RUSH  to get started on your plan!

And when the person sitting beside you inevitably tells you about the great deal they got on their $95 seats and you paid $26.50 for yours learn to just smile and nod...

Cheers, Beatrice

Excerpts from the Georgetown Independent Article - Thursday, December 2, 2010

"Four Groups Get Trillium Cash"

"Receiving funding locally are Georgetown Globe Musical Productions ($150,000), Georgetown Skating Club ($30,500), Roxy Community Music Place ($15,000) and 676 Lorne Scots Royal Canadian Army Cadets ($44,400).

Globe will receive its funding over one year to renovate and re-purpose the Georgetown Armoury in the fairgrounds. The group is renovating the building for its new home. The renovation will help improve the facility’s energy efficiency and make it more accessible to community residents.

“We are absolutely thrilled and very, very grateful,” said Georgetown Globe president Lois Fraser.

“The Trillium Foundation recognized this is an excellent project,” said Fraser. “It is going to enable us to get heating, lighting and accessible washrooms.”

Fraser said the building will be brought up to code so Globe can invite the public in for some performances.

She said although much work has already been done at the armoury, including replacing the roof and sandblasting the building’s interior, “there is still a huge amount of work to be done.”

Globe hopes to start a capital campaign in the new year to raise additional funds to complete the renovation.

Globe hopes to be in and practising in the Armoury by next September."

Ontario Trillium Foundation is an agency of the Government of Ontario.

Other Halton groups receiving funding include:
• Alzheimer Society of Hamilton and Halton— $101,100
• Children’s Aid Society of Halton— $210,000
• Halton Food for Thought— $134,000
• Halton Multicultural Council— $148,500

- On a recent trip to Stratford to see Kiss Me, Kate!, Lois Fraser and Maureen Walker were delighted to bump into David Ambrose at the theatre. As any long-time member of Globe will tell you, David was not only a valued performer and director, but also served as our President at the time that made the move to St. Paul's as our rehearsal space. He is now a teacher at the Etobicoke School for the Arts and lives in downtown Toronto. Lo and Mo were happy to give him all the latest news about Globe.

- A contribution from Maureen Walker: "A few weeks ago, some of the members of the Building Committee were meeting in the Armoury with our architect and building contractor, when a couple of tourists from England wandered in through the open door. One of them was a structural engineer, specialising in the restoration of old buildings. He and Marina, our architect, enthused about our good fortune in acquiring this magnificent building and, on hearing that we have to pay $2 per year to the Town for ground rent, pulled out a $20 bill and paid our first 10 years rent for us! Wasn't that nice of them?"

"Little Red" At Last

It's taken 17 years but she's finally done it.  Jennifer Marshall is happily preparing for the role of "Little Red" (otherwise known as, Little Red Riding Hood) in Globe's upcoming production of Into the Woods

It is a role that she has wanted to do since 1993 - the last time Globe mounted the Tony-award winning musical.  Marshall wasn't considered for the role the last go-around. She was, after all, only 11 at the time.

Growing up in Georgetown, Marshall always wanted to be onstage.  Her older brother, Craig, and her older sister, Shannon, were actively involved in musical theatre both at school and with Globe. Jennifer didn't want to be left behind. In fact, the love of musical theatre was a family affair in the Marshall household.  Jennifer remembers her parents listening to the soundtracks of their favourite musicals on the stereo at home and taking her to shows in Toronto.

"I still remember being amazed when the overture started at Les Miserables in Toronto.  I think I was 10 years old at the time.  I couldn't believe how much it sounded like the record!"  reminisces Marshall.

Educated at Harrison, Centennial and GDHS, Marshall  got her start with Globe shows in 1994, at the age of 12, as a towns person in The Music Man.

"I loved every minute of it.  It was so exciting to finally be onstage!" says Marshall.

Since then, Marshall has been involved in countless Globe shows including:  42nd Street (she loves to tap-dance), Joseph and His Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, Crazy for You (in which her brother made his directorial debut), Guys and Dolls, Cabaret, and many, many more.

Marshall has taken an interest in all aspects of musical theatre both onstage and behind the scenes.  She currently serves on the Globe Board as its Vice-President and over the years has co-directed, produced, written cabarets, choreographed, managed props and more.

Into the Woods runs from November 19 – 27, 2010 at the John Elliott Theatre in Georgetown. For tickets, go to www.haltonhills.ca/theatre or call the John Elliott Theatre box office at (905) 877-3700.

An Armoury Update - November 1, 2010

An Armoury Update from Lois Fraser and Mark Llewellyn:

Winter is coming and we have installed steel slats on the steel roof to stop snow and ice accumulation from ripping off the eaves troughs or landing on the head of some unlucky person hanging out near the building. It cost $3300.00, but it had to be done. We are officially out of money now and waiting for a confirmation from Trillium to see if we got some (or all if we get lucky all) of the $150K that we applied for. If we get the grant, then we will need to launch a $150K + fund raising program in the New Year to take advantage of our momentum and interest in the project. Please think about how you can help!

We are getting down to the time when we examine every aspect of the plan and see if anything needs to be changed in view of where we are at the moment. For instance, we are looking to see if there is any way to get more seating capacity in the main open area, without seriously harming our ability to construct sets. Your committee is meeting on Nov. 11 (Remembrance Day,…how appropriate!) to discuss the next steps.

Seussical - Parent Involvement

A community theatre production of this magnitude cannot be accomplished without the help of many, many dedicated volunteers. If your child becomes part of the Seussical cast, it will be essential to the success of the show for you to assist with pre-show preparation including set construction, painting, costumes, move-in day, etc.

In addition, we will require your assistance during the run of the show backstage (supervising children, helping with props, providing snacks for the cast at intermission) and/or Front of House (taking tickets, seating patrons, handing out programs).

Seussical Performance Fees

Cast members will be required to join Globe with a $30 membership fee (or $50 for two members of the same family). In addition, to help to defray the costs of the production including costumes, sets, etc, a $75 performance fee will be charged to each member of the cast.

Other projected fees involved with the show could be cast photo's, performance DVD's, show t-shirts, cast party tickets. (These are optional items for the cast and may be available for purchase.)

All About Seussical!

If you are thinking about auditioning for Seussical, you may want to do a little research about the show.

Book by: Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty
Co-Conceived by: Eric Idle
Lyrics by: Lynn Ahrens
Music by: Stephen Flaherty

Tip # 1 - Read the synopsis

Based on the beloved characters and stories of Dr.Seuss, this musical incorporates elements from at least 15 Dr. Seuss books and includes appearances by many of his most famous characters.

Seussical the Musical follows the adventures of Horton, an elephant who one day hears voices coming from a speck of dust. He soon discovers that within this tiny speck exists the smallest planet in the universe!

And upon this tiny planet live a tiny race of creatures known as Whos! Although ridiculed by the other animals in the Jungle of Nool for believing in something he cannot see, Horton stubbornly persists in his belief that the Whos exist.

Meanwhile, the citizens of Who are having some adventures of their own, including a war over which side of the bread gets buttered. Jojo, the smallest child in the city of Who, parallels Horton's journey as he is ostracized for the unpopular act of thinking -- an activity not encouraged by the parents and teachers of Whosville.

But in spite of these obstacles, Jojo and Horton attempt to do what they think is right, and together they sing the duet "Alone in the Universe."

However, their path will not be easy. Horton is sold to the Circus McGurkus and eventually goes on trial before Judge Yertle the Turtle before the other animals of the jungle come to understand, as Horton has always known, that "a person's a person, no matter how small."

Tip #2 - Check out the Character Descriptions

Main Characters

Cat in the Hat - Out of this world, incredible at improv throughout the show

Horton Hears a Who - Passive, kind natured, compassionate, gentle, a thinker and a loner of sorts

JoJo - Daydreamer, always in trouble for thinking far too often, child of The Mayor and Mrs. Mayor

Gertrude McFuzz - Madly in love with Horton. Shy, reserved, self-conscious of her looks because she only has one feather.

Mayzie Labird - Arrogant, selfish, flirtatious and flashy in nature.

Sour Kangaroo - Strong willed, listens to no one, an over protective momma kangaroo.

Young Kangaroo - This is a side kick role and can be played by either a kangaroo puppet or as a small child.

Mrs. Mayor - He loves his town and all of his Whos but wishes his son would be more focused.

General Genghis Khan Schmitz - Strong, assertive, arrogant. GGKS has a very strong military presence - yet beneath it all he cares about is his soldiers deeply.

Supporting Characters

Grinch

Bird Girls - Mayzie is the leader and they are ditsy bird girls.

Wickersham Brothers - The trio is always up to no good, causing mischief and havoc especially with Horton.

Yertle the Turtle - An entertaining Judge. Brash loud and very full of himself.

Marshal of the Court- Played by the Cat in the Hat disguised.

Vlad Vladikoff - Played by the evil eagle who takes the clover from the Wickersham trio.

Cindy Lou Who

Max the Dog

The Hunches

The Fishes

The Whos

Jungle of the Nool Citizens

The Hunters

Thing 1 and Thing 2

Circus performers

Sam-I-Am

Tip #3 - Look at some Video Clips

If you would like to see some video clips of other groups who have done Seussical (some good and some not so good), you can do a Seussical search on YouTube and see what you come up with.

Tip #4 - Brush up on your Green Eggs and Ham

You can brush up on your Dr. Seuss books.  Seussical draws on the following Dr. Seuss books, most of which are available at the Halton Hills Public Library. http://hhpl.bibliocommons.com/dashboard

Horton Hears a Who!
How the Grinch Stole Christmas
The Lorax
Green Eggs and Ham
Yertle the Turtle and Other Stories
Horton Hatches the Egg
I Had Trouble in Getting to Solla Sollew
McElligot's Pool
The One Feather Tail of Miss Gertrude McFuzz
Hunches in Bunches
If I Ran the Circus
The Butter Battle Book
Oh, the Thinks You Can Think!
The Cat in the Hat
The Sneetches and Other Stories
Did I Ever Tell You How Lucky You Are?
Oh, the Places You'll Go!

Tip #5 - Check out the sound track on itunes

There are a couple of different versions - try these...

Break a leg!!

Introducing Angel Ottema

We are  delighted to have Angel Ottema in the role as Choreographer for our March Break 2011 youth company show, Seussical

Angel is the owner and director of Dance Spirit Studios in Guelph, Ontario.  http://www.dancespiritstudios.ca/.  Here is a little more about Angel in her own words.

"Dancing has been a "staple" in my life since the age of four and I have hardly missed a beat in over 35 years. I caught the teaching "bug" at the age of 14 and became a certified member of Dance Masters of America (D.M.A.) in 1987. After graduating with an Honours Business Degree from Sheridan College, I opened my first dance studio in Aberfoyle. In the following years, I have continued my education through many distinguished organizations and ultimately D.M.A. Teachers Training School - completing post-graduate work in Dance and Musical Theatre through the University at Buffalo (U@B); where I choose to continue every year with Graduate studies in Dance Education. In 1989 I opened my second dance studio in Rockwood and decided to relocate to Guelph in 2004 to accommodate students from the surrounding areas. Each year I am responsible for directing, producing, costume designing, scenery/prop. designing, and choreographing of Annual Recitals and Community Shows.

Throughout the years I have used my choreographic talents to work with local theatre groups and assist with school plays, large production numbers and performances. I also enjoy the opportunity to volunteer teach to various grade levels at local schools.

With over 25 years of experience teaching Specialized Toddler and Preschool Programs, and all ages/levels in Tap, Jazz, Ballet, Lyrical, Acrobatics, Stepdance, Pointe, Musical Theatre, Modern, Contemporary, Partner/Adagio Dance, Stretch, Dance Fitness, and Social Dance, I feel that Dance Spirit Studios definitely has something to offer for EVERYONE. Most importantly - I love to teach. There is nothing more rewarding than to help someone to learn ~ their success is your success and their achievements are your rewards."

Mike Rainey, Ralph Cunningham Award Winner

Mike Rainey works full time at the Rose Theatre as a theatre technician.  He has designed the lighting for ten of the Globe shows in a volunteer capacity.  In 2008, Mike won a Thea Award from the Association of Community Theatres - Central Ontario (ACT-CO) for his lighting design of Singing in the Rain and was nominated in 2009 for Best Little Whorehouse in Texas

From those who have worked with him, Mike is known as an extremely hard worker, using his own vacation days during tech week (the week preceeding the opening of the show when all the technical components are set including lighting and sound) to make sure everything is set up and working before the cast arrives in the evening to rehearse.

Thank you, Mike, for all that you have contributed.  You are an incredibly valuable asset to Globe and to the theatre!

Ralph Cunningham Award - All About Ralph

We asked Nanci Llewellyn, first recipient of the Ralph Cunningham Award, to give us a little insight into who Ralph was.  Nanci writes,

"Ralph was a kind, giving and compassionate man....even though he sometimes liked to present as gruff, tough and he loved to tease!! Ralph would make you think, he would make you smile and he loved to hug all the theatre gals! He did some acting in his younger years but his real passion, skill and talent was working backstage.

He was a stage-manager, fly operator, set builder, worked as crew, knew about lighting and sound.......he was just so knowledgeable about absolutely everything backstage.....as a result, his expertise was appreciated and respected by all members of Globe (and other theatre groups too). Ralph was particularly passionate about back-stage theatre etiquette...to ensure the safety of the cast while ensuring the show ran smoothly.

Ralph and his wife were farmers, living just outside of Georgetown. For many years Ralph offered his cattle truck for Globe to move our sets to the theatre....despite the odor of the cattle, the gesture was always appreciated. He even loaned us his truck on a few occasions for Globe's entry into the Santa Claus Parade.

Ralph and I met many, many years ago....I didn't move fast enough off stage when he was moving a couch and he knocked me aside....we had a few words and then we became the best of friends for ever more. Ralph and his wife Vivian often entertained us at Globe parties with their incredible clogging dance routines...he loved to dance and he loved to laugh!!! Ralph was a great friend to Globe and Globe members....his memory will live on in our hearts.

It is my understanding that the "Ralph Cunningham Award" is for someone who gives of their time, skills and dedication to the technical aspect of Globe's shows...without the reward of audience applause. I was humbled to be the first recipient of the "Ralph Cunningham Award".....I will cherish the honour forever. Congratulations to Mike Rainey for winning this award.....he too shares Ralph's talents, skills and enthusiasm for the back-stage and wanting to make every Globe show "shine"!!!"

Thank you, Thank you

A Thank you from Lois Fraser, President of the Board of Globe to the outgoing members of the Board:

"We would like to offer our thanks to the following people, who worked diligently on the Executive the past year:

Our Treasurer Maureen Walker (and the “man behind the successful woman”, Chris Walker) has been on the executive for many years and in many capacities. Maureen and Chris put Globe front and centre in all they do. Under X-ray examination, they probably consist of musical notes!

Our Social Convenor, Cecily Restivo, is hanging up her party arranging socks and will produce our Cabaret instead. Thanks, Cecily.

Our Secretary Bobbie Flatt has energy to burn, the enthusiasm of a 20 year old and no doubt has carpel tunnel syndrome from typing up meeting notes and emails. Future historians will look at the notes from the past year and wonder why they were 4 times the size. Thanks for your energy, Bobbie and for continuing your publicity work for Into the Woods.Side Note: Bobbie with an Assistant Director hat on, is the first in our Apprentice Development Program and under the leadership of Into the Woods director Scott Lale.

And last, but certainly not least, we have Melissa Fischer, who has served as VP for three years. Melissa is the hardest working member of Globe and she has taken on jobs that would crush lesser human beings. To say that she has been invaluable to our group is a big understatement. Thanks, Melissa for putting your heart and soul into Globe. We are happy that you will continue your work as “Producer Extraordinaire!”

October Armoury Update

A cute story from Mark Llewellyn:

Lois, Al, Chris, Maureen and I met at the armoury on Thursday with our architect and contractor. While we were discussing matters an older couple stepped in through the open door for a look-see. Lois engaged them in chit-chat and it turns out they are just visiting from the same area of England the Walkers are from. The gentleman's former business was in renovating and restoring old buildings and he was fascinated by the timber construction in ours. When Lois told him about our situation and mentioned our two dollar annual lease agreement with the Town they, get this... handed her 20 bucks and said "we are going home and won't need this Canadian money so here is your rent for the next ten years!!!!!!!!" Wow!

Globe Veterans Head "Into the Woods" Again

Rehearsals are well under way for “Into the Woods”, Globe Musical Productions' first show of the 2010 - 2011 season. And while it might be a new script to most of the cast – three of them are already very familiar with it. Mark Llewellyn, Scott Lale and Paula Gonslaves were in the original cast of “Into the Woods” when Globe performed the Stephen Sondheim hit in the summer of 1993.  Needless to say, they are thrilled to be part of a Tony-award winning show again.

Cast of the 1993 Rendition of "Into the Woods".  Paula Gonslaves as Florinda (pink dress) and Mark Llewellyn as Cinderella's prince (far right)

Llewellyn, who starred as Cinderella's Prince in the original version, is now working behind the scenes constructing the “Into the Woods” sets. To date, he has been involved in more than 60 shows both onstage and off-stage.

Theatre has brought great things to Llewellyn - including his wife, Nanci.  It was a match made on-stage, when in 1990, Globe presented "Guys and Dolls" with Mark starring as Sky Masterson and Nanci starring as Miss Adelaide.  They have been married for 13 years and continue to work together in Globe shows both onstage and behind the scenes.

Introduced to the stage when he was just 10 years old, Scott Lale's career in theatre has been life-long.  After studying theatre in high school and university, Scott Lale appeared in the 1993 rendition as the Baker. Now, a professional Director, he oversees the City of Brampton's in-house theatre company at the Rose Theatre.  As the Director of the current “Into the Woods”, Scott is excited for the chance to work on one of his favourite shows.

“It has been about 10 years since I've been able to work with Globe. Coming back to Globe is like coming home,” remarks Lale. “Sometimes, in this business, you really need to recharge your batteries.  I love to work with the people at Globe. They aren't here to just collect a paycheque – they are here because they really love it.”

Paula Gonslaves who played Florinda, one of the ugly stepsisters in the 1993 portrayal, was a Grade 11 student at the time. Now a full-time drama teacher in a Brampton high school, she plays the Baker's wife in the upcoming show.
“This has to be one of my favourite shows,” says Gonslaves. “I love Sondheim. The music is exceptional and the lyrics are so clever.”

“Into the Woods” runs from November 19 – 27, 2010 at the John Elliott Theatre. Tickets can be purchased online at haltonhills.ca/theatre or by phone at (905) 877-3700.

And if you are curious, here are the lyrics to the song "Thanks for the Armoury", written by Maureen Walker and sung by the Globe members in attendance at the Council meeting after Council approved the sale.

THANKS FOR THE ARMOURY

Thanks for the Armoury,
As you can plainly see, we’re happy as can be,
To have the luck to get a home instead of “wait and see”
How lovely it is!

Thanks for the Armoury
It’s really looking great, inside the Fairgrounds gate,
We promise you we’ll all work hard to keep it in this state,
How lovely it is!

KIDS: We are some kids from the Youth Group
And we adore anything musical,
Next spring we’ll be putting on Seussical,
Our parents too, will vote for you!

So thanks for the Armoury,
At last we have a home, a place to call our own,
A place where we can settle and from which we’ll never roam,
And thank you so much!
